Portland Fun: Soapbox Derby

Living in Portland is very different from living in Hawaii... in that I can't just post beautiful pictures of the beach and lush hikes and blog "look how great our life is!"

Our life is good here. It's just different. We're settling in here, trying to put down roots, make a nice home, settle in slowly. If all goes well, we'll live here for a very long time. We don't feel the urge to get out and do it all. There's time for that. Not to mention, there isn't a world-famous beach down the street.

But my point here is that we are having fun. We are embracing the Portland experience and trying to soak it all up. A few weeks ago we went to check out the annual soapbox derby on Mount Tabor (a dormant volcano in the middle of town!).

I've never been to a soapbox derby. I understand they're typically for kids, in small crates with wheels. If that's the case, this one was different. It was all adults. Clearly, crazy adults. And the soapboxes ran the gamut from classic, to sleek, to hilarious. We had a really good time watching them wiz by and rooting for our favorite.

Teddy bear on wagon. As you might imagine, this one didn't win for speed.

We didn't see this one race. It must have been hilarious.

Lasagna on wheels!

In the pit checking out the vehicles. It was just like a car show, everyone checking out the components and mechanics. Too cute!

There they go!
